What is The Things Network?
The Things Network is a global group of makers, creators, developers, marketers, product designers, engineers and radio enthusiasts and professionals on a mission to create a global network for IoT sensors.
We do this by sourcing and homing gateways that broadcast a radio wavelength called LoRa and we call this network LoRaWAN (Wide Area Network) – this enables the public to use it – it’s a bit like Wi-Fi, but instead of it being used by your phone applications, it is used by sensors – this is how you bootstrap a Smart City or create a connected community and our group has been working with local businesses and government to provide this service to YOU – the community.
The sensors or nodes that use the loRaWAN can be pre-brought but as this technology is relatively new and based on now easy to source electronics, they can also be made. These sensors create data which can measure a whole variety of things from temperature to if a desk is empty, detect if you’ve fallen and much much more.
We are a group of makers (both hobbyist and professionals and some of us are somewhere in between) and consist of some electronics geeks, a stray marketer, a Jewellery maker, some R&D peoples (both current and retired), some branders and software engineers, the odd student and scientist – we are a friendly group welcoming anyone to come along and get involved.
If you are into Gadgets, DevOps, Marketing, Branding, IoT, AI, Big Data, Bio electronics, Bioelectrical engineering, Hardware hacking, Product Design and development, CAD, Jewellery making, Fashion design and wearables, Context derived data science, legal stuff & standards, broadcast telecoms technlogy, hamradio, social care, heath care or have and interest in tech for good then this really is the time to get involved in The Things Network Norfolk (& Suffolk, East Coast and Essex!)
Our group is free to attend, food is provided as are soft drinks. We try to provide materials where we can and now we’ve been going for a year have an active slack which is free to join and use. We welcome ages 14-99 to attend.
