Julia Gwilt – Partner, Appleyard Lees IP LLP

Since joining the patent profession in 1997, Julia has worked on software-implemented inventions such as cryptography and communication networks as well as inventions having complex mathematics, including machine learning at their core. Julia also has considerable experience of working with clients whose inventions lie outside of mathematics in technologies such as agricultural equipment and consumer products including sanitary ware, hair-care devices and e-readers. As well as managing the prosecution of patent portfolios covering the UK and overseas, she has been involved in contentious matters. In recent years, she has managed over 70 oppositions to European patents, most in the field of electronic program guides. Julia is also very interested in training and is a founding member of the Patent Examination Board. In her former position as a partner at Marks & Clerk LLP, Julia spearheaded the training academy which provided both academic support and a peer network to help M&C trainees in preparing for the examinations.
